Lesson 8 challenge

  • Situation 1:  You are having a virtual meeting with a colleague at a nearby branch; discussing a potential collaborative program between the two branches. Then write about …
  1. The benefits of having the meeting online rather than in person
  2. Any challenges, inconveniences, or issues you encountered
  3.  If you would meet online with this person again
  4.  If you would meet with anyone else online, and who might that be
  5. Would a traditional in person meeting have been better? Why?
The SAPL Seniors Committee has talked for some time about meeting virtually, instead of in person after the Adult Services Committee meetings.  However, it is my understanding that (at least at Igo)
Skype is not available.  So everyone would have to create a google account, so that we could use Google Hangouts.    Benefits would include saving time and expense of travel.  It would be a matter of everyone having the same access and agreeing on a date and time to meet virtually.  I am anxious to try this.

Lesson 7 Challenge:  How the Internet works

I used to encounter 404 pages more frequently than I do today.
It was simply a text message. Now creativity has "softened" the bitter pill
of not connecting, but it is still irritating not to travel the Information Highway
where and when one wants.
Lesson 6 Challenge

Readers Advisory using Novelist's Appeals Factors

I was mostly interested in memoir, historical fiction, and mysteries. After experimenting with various appeal factors, I found the "strong sense of place" factor brought up titles and authors which I read and liked.  Authors like Nevada Barr and Louise Erdrich.
Lesson 5 challenge

Learning Express is a great database.  I created an account and then explored the Adult Learning Center.  I was particularly interested in the Real Estate practice tests, as my daughter and son-in-law had just gotten acquainted with this before taking their exam.  They found it "cool" and passed their tests with no problem.  If they had gone online for practice tests, they would have had to pay.

Lesson 4 Part 2

284 articles in May 2001 Consumer Reports

26 articles in volume 80, issue 9 of Consumer Reports

Challenge Lesson 4 Part 1

June 2014 of Consumer Reports had 105 articles

Lesson 3 Part 2 Challenge

The LibGuide on Seniors is very helpful, since I coordinate programs and activities for Seniors at Igo

Travel and genealogy LibGuides are useful with Seniors, since these are two of their primary interests.

Challenge Lesson 3

Recently, a patron wanted to know if the library had any practice tests for real estate.
She and her husband were wanting to study for an upcoming Texas Real Estate test, and
everything they found online was a for-pay site.

I referred them to Learning Express and they found what they were looking and were excited that this was available for free at the library.  I saw them the following week and both had successfully passed the test.

Challenge Lesson 2

Even if you clear your browsing history, it still lurks somewhere in your computer.
I am trying to work on the 2nd series of COSAS 11.5, but it is difficult since I am always at the Reference Desk where there are constant interruptions.
