Lesson 2:  Security

  • A customer shows you a “too good to be true” email about getting free money from Nigeria, and asks you to help them seal the deal with their banking information.
I have received these pfhishing emails several times personally, and also had a patron at Igo who received such an email and asked what he should do about it.   First, I recounted my own experiences and informed him about some "red flags" he could look for:  poor English, misspellings, asking for personal information (SS No., bank account nos., etc).  Then some critical thinking:  why would
someone I don't know trust me with millions of their dollars in my bank account.   Makes no sense.

Lesson 11:  Personal Learning Networks
What does your PLN look like? You may already have a PLN, just didn’t realize your handful of favorite websites had a name. Share on your blog some of your online resources and what you have gained from them.
Since I coordinate the events, programs, and activities for the Igo Seniors Group, the Elderberries, I am constantly searching for new ideas or experiences from others who work with the ever-growing senior population.  The PBS website, NextAvenue, is the public broadcasting website for people 50+.  I regularly receive their newsletter, and always find it chucked full of interesting topics and ideas.  I also subscribe to a blog called ElderChicks, which keeps me in touch with older women around the world.  I even found a German woman from Kiel who was looking for an American PenPal, so I correspond with her in both German and English.   Since our very successful Senior Speed Connect@Igo event for Older Americans month in May, I was invited by the ALA Programming Librarian website to write up the event for that website.

Lesson 10:
Now that you’ve explored the COSA website, the City and Library mobile apps, and our SAPLGovernment LibGuide, go to your blog and write a paragraph about one local and one state or federal government website you explored. How do you think mobile technology will change people’s relationship to government access and services? Will having government services and elected officials “on the go” make us more (or less) democratic as a society?
I explored the San Antonio website, and specifically, CPS.  I hear a lot of neighbors complaining about the exorbitant electric bills.  I see on the CPS website various ways to save energy and opportunities to pay bills in delayed fashion.  However, I have also heard that at various times, when they don't have enough meter readers, they simply let the computer compute your bill, not based on your actual usage, thus resulting in much higher bills.  I see no information about that and feel that is deceptive and should be explained to all CPS users, especially since we  have no choice in providers.
The IRS website is very useful for federal tax information, having all forms with instructions on the site. Since the library now only receives the basic print IRS forms, the IRS website must be used to get the information on other forms.

With the advent of mobile technology, I would expect citizens would want faster and better service.
Having government services and elected officials "on the go" should make us a more democratic society, as it will make us better aware of what government is doing and make elected officials more accountable to the people.

Lesson 8 challenge

  • Situation 1:  You are having a virtual meeting with a colleague at a nearby branch; discussing a potential collaborative program between the two branches. Then write about …
  1. The benefits of having the meeting online rather than in person
  2. Any challenges, inconveniences, or issues you encountered
  3.  If you would meet online with this person again
  4.  If you would meet with anyone else online, and who might that be
  5. Would a traditional in person meeting have been better? Why?
The SAPL Seniors Committee has talked for some time about meeting virtually, instead of in person after the Adult Services Committee meetings.  However, it is my understanding that (at least at Igo)
Skype is not available.  So everyone would have to create a google account, so that we could use Google Hangouts.    Benefits would include saving time and expense of travel.  It would be a matter of everyone having the same access and agreeing on a date and time to meet virtually.  I am anxious to try this.
